The app is designed to work fully offline. In Private mode no document text, questions, answers, filenames, or usage data are transmitted for any purpose, so they never leave your Mac, and there is no analytics or crash-telemetry SDK. The only network activity is ordinary system behaviour when you open a cited source file or a link in another app.
Online mode is off unless you turn it on (Settings ▸ Modules ▸ Connection). You then enter your own API key for a cloud AI provider you choose — Anthropic, OpenAI or Google — and the key is stored in your Mac's Keychain.
When an answer would be worded by that provider, the app first shows you exactly what would be sent — passages from your documents and your question, the destination and its size — and nothing is sent until you agree. You can have names, email addresses, phone numbers and long identifiers replaced by placeholders first. The text goes directly from your Mac to that provider, under your own account and that provider's terms and privacy policy; it never passes through any server of ours, and every send is recorded on your Mac. Only a separate, sandboxed helper inside the app can connect, and only to those three providers over HTTPS. One click returns you to Private mode.
The free trial and the one-time purchase are handled by Apple through the App Store. Investigation Docs Made Easy itself opens no connection for them and never sees your payment details; the App Store only tells the app whether this Apple account has the trial or the purchase.
If you turn on sync, the app writes your notes, tags, groups, highlights, PDF marks and the files you added inside the app into a folder you choose, encrypted with your passphrase. That folder's own service (for example iCloud Drive or Dropbox) moves the files between your devices; the app itself makes no connection, and the passphrase is never stored.
The Safari clipper downloads nothing: it hands the page your browser already shows, or your selection, to the app on your Mac, and only when you clip.
Anything you send to Investigation Docs Made Easy from the Share or Services menu is saved into the app's own folder on your Mac with a record of when and from where; nothing is downloaded. A snapshot you export for the iPhone/iPad viewer is a folder you carry yourself (AirDrop, Files, a disk); its database is encrypted with a passphrase you set, and the viewer only reads it.
Any export you trigger (answers, reports, diagnostics) is written to a location you choose or an app-private folder. Exports may contain your source content and file paths — they are created only on your explicit action and are never uploaded.
